On-page vs off-page SEO

To understand the difference between on-page and off-page SEO, it is better to go back to the basics of SEO. On the same subject : SEO services for entrepreneurs available nationwide from Get Found Fast. There are three core types of SEO:

On -page SEO refers to efforts made directly to the page that you want to optimize, such as improving content or adding keywords.

Off-page SEO refers to efforts made on other pages on your site, or with other sites, to help your pages to rank, such as backlinking, listings, social promotion, guest posting, PR, and more.

Technical SEO refers to efforts that involve site source code, sitemaps, speed, security, structured data, and many more words that do not begin with an S.

When the overlapping circles look good, they are prepared that way because these efforts are all interconnected. For example, you will not get backlinks (off-page) if your page content is not quality (on page), and compressing images (on page) helps with page speed (technically).

1. Keyword research

First and foremost, do your keyword research. You will not be able to perform the steps in this post if you do not know what keywords you are targeting. We show you how to do keyword research here, but here are some tips:

Post your blog where you will do most of your keyword targeting and on -page SEO.

Use keyword research tools to search for keywords with high volume and low competition.

Target one keyword or keyword theme per page. For example, this post targets the keywords “on page SEO” as well as “on page seo checklist” and “what is on page seo” because if I write separate posts on each keyword, they will compete against the others in the SERP .

Google your keywords. If you perform all of the following steps but your page content does not match the intent of the keywords you are targeting, you will not be able to rank!

2. Content quality

Google defines thin content as authentic and provides little value — like auto-generated copy, thin affiliate pages, scraped content, and doorway pages.

But just because your page doesn’t match the above criteria doesn’t mean your content isn’t thin. The key word above is “value”. If you want your page to rank for your targeted keywords, it should:

Trusted: information is accurate and delivers on title promises.

Usefulness: provides the information that users are looking for when searching for that keyword.

Actionable: any “what” s must be accompanied by a “how”, even if it means a link to a separate resource.

Readable: information is organized, can be moved through headers, reads like a human being writing, and text is separated by images, bullets, call quotes, and other visual elements.

Sufficient length: if the page you are optimizing is a blog post, aim for at least 1,500 words. Hubspot recommends 2,100-2,400 words based on the average length of its 50 blog posts, but also says that a third of the above posts were less than 1,500 words.

Free of feathers: i.e., do not use many words to say little.

3. Keyword placement

Now if you write human -such quality content, keywords and related LSI keywords will occur naturally in the body of the text. But there are some places where you should intentionally place your target keywords. These include:

Page title: This is the title of such a page that appears on the page.

Title Tag: This is the title of the page as it appears in the SERP.

First 100 words of the page: Make sure this is entered naturally.

Title: ideally at least two H2 on the page.

Meta description: This is a summary of your pages that appear in the SERP.

Image alt text: Alternative image text.

Image file name: Do not just save an image as “Screenshot-1” or “chart”.

If you’re confused by the list above, don’t worry-the rest of this guide will dive deeper into each.

4. Images

Images themselves are an on -page optimization since they keep readers engaged on the page, and factor time on page into ranking. But there are more images on the page than meets the eye. Here is your image optimization checklist:

Optimize for speed: Resize your image so that the width does not exceed the maximum width of the page (your site will automatically adjust the size, but this still requires a request to the server), and compression to reduce the file size without sacrificing quality (I use tinypng.com because it’s fast , it’s free, and there’s a cute panda.) If you have a very large site with a lot of images, you thought you’d want to look into a content delivery network (CDN).

Add alt text: This is the text alternative of an image. This is how you tell Google (and how screen readers can tell visually impaired) what your image is about, and should contain the keywords you’re targeting.

Communicate value: Use images to illustrate concepts on your page, such as graphics, screenshots, and even your own illustrations (how to use Canva here!) Not blank graphics.

Don’t replace text with images: Alt text is only intended for a few words, so when you use an image to convey information relevant to the keywords you are targeting, make sure that the information is well written out in the body. page text.

Optimize Filename: The file name of the image you upload to your page should contain the keywords you are targeting. Be sure to also replace spaces in the file name with hyphens or underscores. Otherwise, they will be replaced by “%20” or something that is unreliable and can affect your image ranking in image results.

In the image at the top of this post, I optimized for the keyword “on page vs off-page SEO”. My alt text reads “ratio of on-page vs off-page vs SEO technical,” “My file name” technical-vs-on-page-vs-off-page-seo.png, and I have both compressed and resized the image.

5. Title

There are two different titles for web pages that are given on a web page:

Title Tag: Also known as the meta title or SEO title, this is the title of the page as it appears in the search results. The optimal title tag is 60 characters or less and contains the keywords you are targeting. Be sure to open the headline and keywords to make sure they are not cut off on a smaller screen.

H1 tag: This is the title of the page that readers see when they are on that page. You have more room here to be creative and deliver value here, but it still needs to contain keywords.

Your title tag and H1 tag don’t have to be different, but it’s good to know you have this option. Regardless, a strong title is a necessity for on -page SEO because it affects whether users click on your page or not. Strong title:

Convey value. What is beneficial for the reader? “7 Yoga Poses to Try Now” didn’t give me a reason to click. “7 Yoga Poses That Improve Sleep” on the other hand, no.

Your overpromise. Do not call it a good guide if it is not wrong, or change it to match the top pages that are not for that request if it does not contain that content.

It’s descriptive. “Services” can work as the page title on your web page, but in the SERP, this can mean anything. Instead, go with the “Affordable Norfolk Landscape Services Package”

It’s interesting. This does not mean using letters, hyperbolic words, or exclamation marks! Use power words, like “supercharge” instead of “boost”. You can see 88 examples of this title for ideas and guidance.

6. Headings

Titles work to organize the information on your page into clear sections and sub -sections. This conveys to readers the page hierarchy, but Google needs to know that too in order to understand its relevance to the keyword you’re targeting. But it is not possible to identify titles based on font size and font weight such that we can. Instead, Google sees it in HTML.

There are six types of title tags. If you use a CMS such as WordPress, SquareSpace, etc., you will see a drop-down menu of title tags in your editor (you can adjust the size of these titles as well), but you can also apply them manually. in the HTML code.

& lt; H1 & gt; is the title of the page; You should have only one H1 per page.

& lt; H2 & gt; label the main part of your content. A well-optimized page can have anywhere from two to 22 H2s (that’s a lot of both in there), depending on how much content is available, but you should always have at least two that contain the keywords you’re targeting — which should. easy to do a section in your post and conclusion.

& lt; H3 & gt; was used to further label the different points made in each H2 section. Use this if needed, but don’t force it and don’t worry about having keywords here.

& lt; H4 & gt; ka & lt; H6 & gt; These headers don’t really have SEO value, and if you’re chopping up your content that much, it probably won’t be very readable. I sometimes use H4s but only once in a blue moon.

The title tag also allows Google to load your page in the results for more specific questions related to that page, allowing you more opportunities to appear on the first page of Google. The most important thing to remember with the title is to make sure that it is descriptive. Readers should be able to receive the core of the page simply by skimming the title.

7. Meta description

Meta description is the description of your page that appears in the SERP title. Consider the ads for your pages, as well -written action descriptions tell browsers your writing will answer their questions and prompt clicks. Here is a list of your action descriptions:

“This post provides a list of power words and alternative versions of words that are commonly used in your marketing materials.”

Write more memorable marketing copy with this list of more than 350 power words and phrases for email, blog, social, advertising, and more!

Google will not always use the meta description you have provided. It’s the dynamic creation of your content based on demand — that’s why it’s important to have title tags in it. Remember also that act descriptions also appear in preview snippets, such as the ones you see on social media.

8. URL

Mostly, if not all CMS generate an automatic URL for your page — sometimes the title you assign or sometimes some number. You are about to edit this URL to:

9. Links

There are two types of links involved in on page SEO — internal links and external links (also called backlinks). We share some good intel to link in this 10 step SEO audit, but this is basic.

External links

This is a link on your page that takes users to another domain. The best in -page SEO practice is to link to pages about topics from web sites that have high domain authority. This helps Google trust your page more. In writing his SEO techniques, Brian Dean recommends linking to at least 3 high quality domains

Internal links

These are links on your page that take readers to other pages on your site. Your page should not only include internal links, but other pages on your site should link to the one you are optimizing.

For anything with linking, the anchor text should be specific to the page you’re linking to and contain the keywords it’s targeting. Not only does this make for a better user experience, but the more links to your page that use keywords as anchor text, the better your chances of ranking.

10. A few technical optimizations

I know, I know, this is not a technical SEO checklist, but as I said earlier, different types of SEO are interconnected. Here are some things that should be there, but sometimes there are glitches to easily solve the problem if your page is not working as you expect.

Mobile-friendly: Your site as a whole should be built with a responsive design — meaning it will adapt to any screen size — but sometimes, elements fall through the cracks. If you’ve already inserted a video or added a table to your page, for example, double -check to make sure it appears correctly on your mobile.

Crawlability: Your pages will not be able to rank if they are not indexed. And it can’t be indexed if it can’t be crawled. If your web page appears in the SERP, it is indexed. But sometimes, posts or blog pages are accidentally not indexed for one reason or another. If a page is getting unexpectedly low traffic, check the back end of the page in your CMS to make sure indexing is not turned off. If not, you can use the Search Console to resolve the issue.

Social sharing buttons: These are done at the site level, usually through plugins, and make it easier for others to enhance your content. Just make sure the plugin doesn’t slow down your site.

Page rate: Page rate is a ranking factor, and large images are not the only thing that can drag a page down. Use PageSpeed Insights to check the speed of your individual pages. Both tools will tell you what you should do if you got a bad score.

11. Content freshness

The importance of content freshness can vary depending on demand, but it is important to periodically update any page that you want to rank to maintain its value. I have a complete content refresh checklist here, but for a peek, here are some updates that you can implement:

Free on-page SEO checkers

As you can see now, page rank at the top of Google is not simply streaming. There are many jobs involved, and these are for every page on your site. Luckily, there are SEO checkers on the page to help you.

SEO Tools: Free trials of sites such as Ahrefs and Semrush can run a comprehensive audit on your web site to check on -page, off -page and technical SEO factors. This is best for SEO specialists who know what to search for and how to read results.

WordPress Plugin: Is Yoast, which will give you scores and recommendations about the readability and keyword targeting of your content. Take these suggestions with a grain of salt though.

Website class: This tool is more beginner-friendly. LOCALiQ Free Website Grader provides reports like the following, explaining what the results mean and prioritizing action items for you.
